The Mu variant is worrying scientists in South America. The UK and Australia are set to collaborate on vaccines to make sure both countries have what they need, when they need it. We still don’t know whether the UK will be vaccinating 12-15 year olds, even though numerous countries around the world are doing it. And a third jab might be on the cards for a few of us... or most of us. We’re waiting for a decision. Here’s the news.
The MU variant is hovering in the background
Have you heard about the MU variant? Also called B.1.621, it’s a new form of the SARS-CoV-2 virus first seen in Colombia, South America, in January this year. Since being discovered it has also popped up in other South American countries as well as Europe.
The World Health Organization declared Mu a ‘variant of interest’ in August 2021, which means it has mutations that might result in ‘potential properties of immune escape’. And that means the current crop of vaccines may be less effective against it. At the moment nobody knows, and studies are being carried out to discover the real threat behind Mu.
So far we’ve seen just a few larger outbreaks in South America and Europe. It’s good to know that, on the whole, the variant is currently in decline, affecting less than 0.1% of sequenced cases. On the other hand the numbers in Colombia, at 39%, and Ecuador at 13% are worrying, and are ‘consistently increasing’. Let’s hope MU doesn’t make its way to the UK.
UK and Australia collaborate to share vaccines
Britain has set up a covid jab trade deal with Australia. We’re due to send 4 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine Down Under. The exchange deal will see Australia sending the same volume to the UK before the end of 2021. The deal is designed to help the UK align vaccine supplies better with real-world demand, including covering potential booster programmes as well as rollout extensions to younger teens. The move should also help Australia come out of lockdown faster.
As we write over 50% of Australians, including those in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra, are being asked to stay at home. Just 36% of those aged over 16 are fully vaccinated. New South Wales has recently recorded 1431 new cases and 12 deaths, the state’s highest daily death number so far. Experts say NSW’s infection levels should reach a peak within two weeks before starting to decline.
The UK’s vaccination levels
Around 25% of young adults in the UK have still not had their first jab. For those aged 18 to 29, just over 23% remain unvaccinated in Wales, 25.6% in Scotland, 27.7% in England and 29.2% in Northern Ireland.
Who is vaccinating 12-15 year olds?
The UK is one of the few countries in Europe not offering the vaccine to all children aged 12-15. At least 29 European nations are vaccinating children aged 12 and over or are planning to start soon. So are Singapore, Japan, UAE, Israel, the US, China, Canada, and the Philippines. In the USA almost 8 million kids aged 12 - 15 have had at least one jab, and Australia will offer jabs to all children aged 12-15 from 13th September 2021.
Weakened immune system? You will be offered a third jab
Around half a million people in the UK aged 12 or more who have badly-weakened immune systems will be offered a third jab. At the same time the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation is still deciding whether to offer the rest of us a booster. The decision about this, and about jabs being offered to all 12-15 year olds, will be made ‘over the next few weeks’.
2 jabs almost halves the risk of long covid in adults
Two jabs almost halves the chance of your getting long covid, which is good news when the latest long covid symptom – kidney problems – is so nasty. A team at King’s College London analysed data from over 2 million people and the results revealed those of us who are double-jabbed are 73% less at risk of ending up in hospital and 31% less likely to develop ‘severe’ symptoms.
The end is not in sight!
New variants, vaccination targets missing the mark, different vaccination protocols in different countries... none of this bodes well for businesses, with ongoing uncertainty the name of the game.
