This week we’ll find out more about how the government aims to handle covid through the winter. How will you, as a business owner, go about keeping your employees happy when some people’s level of risk aversion is very different from others? What are the latest covid stats and why are they so confusing? Here’s the latest news about covid, and how to disinfect your premises against it.
Covid risk aversion – How to keep all your employees happy
New numbers from the Office of National Statistics reveal over 600 people died in England from covid during the first six months of the year, despite being fully vaccinated.
Picture this. Employee A isn’t very bothered about catching covid. They’re happy to come into work. They feel perfectly safe being indoors with their colleagues. Employee B feels very unsafe indeed, trapped indoors with their fellow workers in a space that’s hard to ventilate properly. How do you keep both types of people happy?
The trick is to maximise your anti-covid measures, and that means fast, impactful disinfection. The last thing you want is constant interruptions thanks to hours spent cleaning. UVC disinfection has been used in healthcare settings for decades, proven to kill off viruses like covid by wrecking their DNA and RNA, and it takes very little time to make a space safe. Wheel a UVC covid disinfection robot into the room, switch it on, come back a short time later and it’s done. We can’t think of a faster, more effective way to boost everyone’s confidence in an indoor setting.
Confusing covid stats
On one hand we have headlines in the Express newspaper about covid fatalities soaring by 25% and fears of an October lockdown, as revealed by new NHS data. At the same time headlines in The Sun newspaper insist that UK Covid cases and deaths have decreased by almost a fifth in a week. The most up to date government figures show 8,098 people are hospitalised with coronavirus in the UK, the highest number since 10th March 2021, and more than 100 of them are on ventilators.
As we write, 56 fatalities have been reported in the last day. This brings the total deaths in the UK to 134,200. Or does it? The overall death toll is hard to grasp since covid deaths are counted in three different ways.
Whatever the true number, it’s good to have an accurate picture of what’s going on out there so you can protect your employees, your customers, and your bottom line.
UK falls behind on vaccination rates
While the UK was leading Europe on vaccination until recently, now we’re falling behind. Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Ireland and more are reporting higher vaccination levels than us, mostly because they’ve already extended jabs to 12 to 15-year-olds. People in these countries also had their jabs more recently, which matters because the effectiveness of vaccines reduces over time. This means people in these other countries have better immunity levels than we do here in the UK. You can see why there are calls from increasing numbers of scientists to boost immunity in the UK’s population with a third jab. It’s also clear from Israel’s experiences that booster shots for the wider population are ‘very effective’ at driving transmission and infection levels down.
The Southern USA’s fourth covid wave causes havoc
The USA’s fourth covid wave is causing chaos in south Missouri and several other conservative southern states where vaccination levels among the under-65s is around 40% less than in north east USA. The gap is even wider in the 12-17 age band.
Right now around 100,000 Americans are hospitalised and they’re seeing 1500 deaths every day. The spike is spreading quickly to the north to affect Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio, as well as roaring west into Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. South Dakota has a spike of its own, which has been traced back to a motorbike rally.
Comparing the USA’s experiences with the UK, which is now seeing a surge in cases of more than 30,000 a day, the future is looking grim. The USA has much lower vaccination levels. UK cases of Delta are soaring despite our higher vaccination levels. The huge number of unvaccinated Americans means the USA could be in big trouble before long.
Let’s talk UVC covid disinfection
As we sail into yet more uncertainty this winter, certainty becomes more precious than ever. Our UVC robots kill covid as well as a host more viruses, leaving spaces clean and safe. If that sounds good, please get in touch.
