The latest laboratory tests reveal how the Delta variant escapes the body’s immune responses a lot more easily than Alpha. At the same time scientists and educators have slammed the UK education secretary Gavin Williamson for allowing the mass infection of children, calling his actions ‘reckless’ and recommending nine ways to protect us all from a fourth wave, including vaccinating all 12-to-15-year-olds.
Experts say at infection is 26 times higher than at the same time last year. The UK is seeing 40-50 under 18 year olds hospitalised every day, and “There has been no plan for robust mitigation measures in schools to reduce the risk for children from infection and the consequences thereof.”
In times like this, it’s more important than ever to be able to rely on a means of disinfecting your business, keeping your employees, suppliers, visitors and customers as safe as you can. And it looks a lot like UVC is still the front-runner in the fight against covid and other pathogens.
China develops an anti-covid UVC sterilisation device
A new UVC sterilisation device developed by China has achieved a 99.99% inactivation rate against covid. The HGC-UVC sterilization device has passed all the relevant tests and is one of the first UVC sterilization products approved in the country. The machines come with an effective band of light that falls between 260 nm and 280 nm, which was found to kill 99.99% of covid within just ten minutes. The new device is better at sterilising than traditional mercury lamps, uses less energy and has a much longer service life. It also kills pathogenic bacteria like staphylococcus aureus, candida albicans, and coliform, as well as other coronaviruses.
Qatar Airways harnesses UVC tech in its aircraft
Qatar Airways is the world’s first global carrier to fit the latest Honeywell Ultraviolet Cabin System on board its planes. The new machines are more flexible, reliable and mobile than the originals, featuring extended UV wings to disinfect better and reduce disinfection time. The devices have been carefully tested on board and the airline intends to fit the tech to all its aircraft turnarounds at Hamad International Airport. At the same time Collins Aerospace has just unveiled Lilac-UV, a new sanitizing light solution for aircraft interiors.
Japanese study confirms effectiveness of pulsed xenon UV
In another piece of research confirming the power of UVC light, researchers at Hiroshima University Hospital in Japan have published a study confirming the effectiveness of LightStrike pulsed xenon ultraviolet light disinfection technology on surfaces contaminated with the ancomycin-resistant superbug Enterococci. The deadly pathogen can live on hospital surfaces for weeks and isn’t easy to remove using manual cleaning methods.
University of Michigan explores high efficiency UV to sterilise covid
A team at the University of Michigan has been exploring using high efficiency ultraviolet light emitting diodes to sterilise pathogens, including covid. They’re busy figuring out how to improve the quantum efficiency and wall-plug efficiency of deep UV LED. (Coll in case this doesn’t make sense, here’s a link to the article. Am I saying the right thing? https://phys.org/news/2021-08-high-efficiency-ultraviolet-emitting-diodes-sterilize.html)
EMT in Kuala Lumpur releases a flat irradiation air disinfector
The EMT Group Sdn Bhd is proud to announce they’re now the sole distributor of a UVC machine from Doneax Science and Technology Co Ltd. The UV Upper Flat Irradiation Air Disinfector blends traditional air disinfection with a UV lamp to disinfect against the virus. It is already widely used in China’s hospitals, maternity centres, clinics, schools, restaurants, and public transport. The company aims to sell 5000 machines in Malaysia by end of 2021.
Las Vegas schools adopt UVC covid disinfection technology
Over in the USA the Clark County School District is rolling out newly-bought machines that use ultraviolet light to zap covid and other pathogens.
Germicidal UVC in US healthcare facilities
Healthcare facilities in the US are adopting germicidal LED UVC light technology to draw air in, irradiate it with UV light, then release clean air. The tech is already significantly improving indoor safety by providing continuous airborne disinfection of viruses, bacteria and more.
UV fixtures have been used for many years to clean surfaces, but until recently the tech hasn’t been safe for use in occupied spaces. The new tech ‘safely and constantly’ disinfects air in occupied rooms. UVC is proven to disinfect air, water and nonporous surfaces, used for decades to stop diseases like tuberculosis, influenza and Legionnaires’ disease spreading.
USA CDC gives UVC the only green light
The USA’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says UVC is the ‘only recognized technology for effective germicidal treatment for airborne pathogens’.
