UVC Research from Nevada, USA
The University of Nevada Reno has carried out extensive virology laboratory testing of ultraviolet-C (UVC) light. The results show that sterilisation of a human coronavirus in the covid family takes less than
eight seconds at a distance of five feet. Now they've developed a patented technology that blends the highest power UVC LED diodes with 'unique optical lenses' to 'intensify and project' UVC rays.
As the scientists involved said, “UVC-LED sanitization unit demonstrated complete virus inactivation under all the tested conditions. These results confirmed that the UVC-LED disinfection system can provide
rapid, reliable, safe, and complete inactivation of human coronavirus from surfaces... within 8 seconds at 5 feet distance.”

UK research explores small far UVC devices
In 2020 Dr Andrew Buchan and Dr Liang Yang looked into ‘Predicting airborne coronavirus inactivation by far-UVC in populated rooms using a high-fidelity coupled radiation-CFD model’, examining the potential of
far-UVC in disinfecting indoor airflow.
They wanted to look at virus inactivation in occupied rooms using a simple far-UVC lamp, and encountered problems. The air flow in a room is extremely dynamic and complicated, with particles being transported in
many different ways. A simple lamp provides varying levels of intensity depending on its distance from the virus particles and the shadows inevitably cast by furniture in a room. This means a lamp's position
impacts the amount of virus inactivation it can achieve.
In future the researchers believe there might be a way to harness extremely simple far-UVC technologies the size of lightbulbs, which don't need any extra shielding but can be safely used when people are
present. They say this could be vital in the early days of a pandemic when vaccines haven't been developed. For now the team plans to look deeper into the matter using computer simulations.

Indian banks, offices and medical facilities are using hand-held UV disinfection technology. The idea is to disinfect the things people frequently touch, because it's not possible to use water and chemicals

Nevon's UV Disinfection devices are being used in several State Bank of India branches, major Hospitals, and many clinics across India, where they're popular because there are no recurring costs and no water supply
required. The six devices that have been developed so far all harness

UVC disinfection and commercial HVAC
Olympia Lighting in New Jersey, USA, has just received a Virus Reduction Efficacy Test Report on its UVC Linear LED Strip testing from an independent laboratory. The technology was found to deliver more than
99.9% reduction of the covid virus.
Olympia's UVC device uses Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation LED technology to inactivate pathogens circulating inside an air system. An exposure of 8 minutes provided the best percentage of reduction of over
99.9 percent, and they also saw a virus reduction of 99.4 percent in just 60 seconds.
It looks like using UVC disinfection LED light inside HVAC systems is a reliable way to clean air between the return and supply, either opposite the coils or inside the Air Handler Unit. The research continues.

Qatar airways adopts UVC cabin disinfection
Qatar Airways is the first global airline to use Honeywell’s Ultraviolet Cabin System version 2.0 to help make its aircraft covid-safe.
Qatar Airways aircraft have already been fitted with advanced air filtration systems including industrial-size HEPA filters designed to remove 99.97% of viral and bacterial contaminants from re-circulated
air. Honeywell's latest UV Cabin System V2 UVC devices have been extensively tested inside Qatar's aircraft, now they're planning to use them on board all aircraft turnarounds at Hamad International Airport.
This is the first airline to do so, and they've found the latest version of Honeywell's system both 'user friendly and technologically advanced'.
