In a week when UK covid cases are rising again for the first time since mid-July, there’s some intriguing news about the virus that has changed our world. Can the omicron variant help protect against flu? Is the virus responsible for a rise in early puberty in girls? Read on to find out. There’ also a ‘smart’ face mask being tested, designed for the wearer to detect coronavirus on other people’s breath. Here’s the covid news.
Does a dose of omicron protect you against the flu?
According to lab studies there’s a possibility that the omicron variant might protect people against flu. It looks like the H1N1 seasonal flu virus didn't manage to get a grip on bronchial cells containing the omicron variant, but did reproduce in cells containing the delta variant.
A team at the University of Kent carried out the work, measuring H1N1 flu levels in control cells and those infected with delta. They also discovered cells containing the omicron subvariants produced a protective immune response called the interferon response, known to stop flu viruses replicating so much.
Is covid linked to early-onset puberty in girls?
It’s another covid mystery. A number of studies reveal there might be a link between the virus and girls starting puberty early, something that has more than doubled during the pandemic. So far, nobody knows why.
The number of girls with early puberty at just one German medical centre remained the same at fewer than 10 a year from 2015-2019. The number shot up to 23 in 2020 and to 30 in 2021. They’ve seen the same in California, USA, where pre-covid cases numbering 28 shot up to 64 cases post-covid. Studies in Italy and Turkey have revealed the same pattern.
Early puberty is usually rare, affecting one in five to ten thousand children and ten times more likely in girls than boys. The reason has never been pinned down. The condition can lead to a person being unusually short, suffer heart disease, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, plus anxiety in boys, and depression in girls. Some scientists also suspect that the average age of onset might also have dropped.
The German study saw pre-pandemic early puberty onset usually happening at around aged 7.6, compared with 6.8 of children diagnosed during covid. Statistical analyses hint it isn’t an accidental result. But why’s it happening?
For a start, stress can cause earlier puberty. As can a rapid gain in a child’s weight, something that could potentially happen thanks to lockdowns and restrictions. But the children studied hadn’t put on any more weight than average. Spending more time on screens and disturbed sleep could also be having an impact. One Italian study revealed girls diagnosed with early onset puberty during lockdown suffered more disturbed sleep and had later bedtimes than girls diagnosed with the condition before covid kicked off.
At the same time experts doubt it has anything to do with the girls actually catching covid, since children have been less vulnerable to covid all along. The hope is that going back to school will help children adapt better to ‘pandemic-related challenges’ like early puberty. The research continues.
A smart face mask that can tell you if someone else has covid
Face masks help protect the wearer and those around them from covid. Now a smart face mask is being developed to detect covid on other people’s breath thanks to a clever sensor in the valve.
The prototype N95 mask is very sensitive to virus proteins, and although ongoing tests are required it seems to be able to pinpoint ‘tiny amounts’ of the virus after a ten minute chat with an infected person. Once that happens the mask sends a signal to the wearer’s smartphone, so they can remove themselves from danger. If there’s no danger they can take the mask off and have a safe conversation. The work is at the early stages and hasn’t been fully tested, but it’s an exciting idea.
