There’s all sorts of covid news being reported. Here are some facts you can trust, as reported by New Scientist magazine.
This news comes directly from people who know the score, whose only agenda is the truth. It’s vitally important not to be misled when one study reveals that 33% of people in the UK believe the government is exaggerating the number of covid deaths, and around 2 million of us in the UK are already struggling to cope with Long Covid.
The latest ONS stats about long covid in the UK
Around 2 million of us in the UK are suffering from ongoing covid symptoms more than four weeks after being infected. The ONS survey reveals an estimated 3.1% of us were struggling with long covid symptoms at 1st May 2022, two hundred thousand more than the ONS’ previous estimate on 3rd April.
1.4 million long covid sufferers have been coping with ongoing illness for at least 12 weeks. 826,000 are estimated to have been suffering for at least a year, and 376,000 were first infected at least two years ago. 55% were chronically fatigued, 32% were short of breath, 23% had a cough, and 23% had ongoing aching muscles.
Your best covid defence is three jabs
Three doses of any covid vaccine is apparently the best defence against covid. A study proving this took place at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The team analysed 53 different vaccine studies that took place during the pandemic, covering a whopping 100 million people who were given 7 types of covid vaccine in 24 different combinations. It looks like three jabs of any mRNA vaccine gives you 96% protection against both symptomatic and asymptomatic covid, even when the different variants are factored in.
Covid conspiracy theory is widespread
A team at King’s College London surveyed 12,000 people about covid. The study quizzed people in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Norway and Poland. The results were shocking – around 33% of Brits believe the government is exaggerating the number of covid deaths. In Poland it’s 43%. The country where people trust the government’s stats most of all is Norway. Just 24% of Norwegians don’t trust their own government’s numbers.
It also looks like 15% of UK residents don’t believe almost all scientists think covid vaccines are safe. This reveals a ‘stubborn minority’ who don’t believe the scientific consensus about vaccine safety and don’t think the government reporting of covid deaths is truthful.
The omicron picture... revealed
The UK’s ONS Coronavirus Infection Survey shows that when omicron was dominant, it came with a re-infection risk 8 times higher than delta. A previous ONS survey showed the risk of re-infection was 10 times higher when omicron was dominant than when delta was in full swing.
Heart issues emerge for those hospitalised with covid
If you’re hospitalised with covid you face the risk of impaired function of the right side of your heart, as revealed by a study into 121 people who were critically ill with the virus. Just under a third of them had abnormalities to the right side of the heart, affecting the blood supply to the lungs.
Air pollution increases the risk of severe covid
A Canadian study along with another in California both show air pollution can increase the risk of severe covid. They examined people’s medical records to discover links between covid outcomes and exposure to fine PM2.5 particles and nitrogen dioxide. The Canadian study looked into ozone exposure as well.
The California team saw people exposed to higher levels of PM2.5 being 20-30% more at risk of hospitalisation, ventilation, and intensive care. Nitrogen dioxide exposure increased the risk by 12 – 18%. The Canadian team found those exposed to even low levels of pollution were at more risk of intensive care, especially when ozone was involved. With air pollution an increasing problem in UK cities, it’s important we do everything possible to turn the tide.
Our covid killer light tech also kills other pathogens
Air quality, indoors and out, is a hot topic. Too many commercial premises and public spaces in the UK, old and new, are not properly ventilated. Our UVC lights kill covid and a host more pathogens, which goes a long way towards dealing with the ongoing health risks behind poor ventilation. It’s a no-brainer for keeping people safe!
