Airlines are adopting safe covid killing UVC tech, it looks like UV saves lives in hospitals, and the experts are recommending autumn booster jabs for vulnerable people. Let’s take a look at the latest news from the UVC disinfection world.
Airlines are keen to use UVC when planes are in flight
We’re seeing reports about ultraviolet light-based disinfection systems in the UVC wavelength range being used more widely in aviation, as airline operators do everything they can to neutralize microorganisms in cabins and cockpits. The tech is proven, having been widely used in healthcare settings for decades. So what’s the story?
UVC-led disinfection solutions are being used to bathe surfaces in strong germicidal UVC light after passengers have left a plane. This means there’s no danger to the occupants. But there’s more. As we know, ultraviolet light applications can also be used while planes are full of people and flying.
Take Diehl, which is using UVC tech as part of its licensing agreement with Boeing. Emitting Far-UVC light at a specific wavelength, the tech is installed in aircraft lavatories, galleys, flight decks, cargo bays, passenger service units and anywhere else with cabin lighting. It is so effective that many more companies in the aviation sector are considering using UV light disinfection like ours to keep passengers and staff safe.
Like us they believe Far-UVC tech is the ideal aircraft solution, since it’s perfectly safe to use when people are present. Passengers enjoy continually-cleaned air and surfaces, the installation is very simple, and aircraft downtime is minimal.
US narrow-band ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) phototherapy success
Over in New Orleans a randomised pilot study by a team at the LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine reveals UVB light is safe for covid patients. It also decreases death rates, although because the group studied was only small the results need to be confirmed by a larger study.
The 30 patients involved were hospitalized but didn’t need oxygen supplementing or intensive care. They were treated every 24 hours with either escalating doses of NB-UVB or a placebo. Nothing bad happened. In fact the team actually saw ‘reduced mortality’ in unvaccinated and fully or partially vaccinated patients.
Exposure to UV radiation triggers a lot of molecular responses in the skin. This drives strong immune responses, including decreased ‘pathologic inflammation’ and improved ‘intracellular killing’ of pathogens.
It looks like ultraviolet light helps stabilize the human immune system in many diseases, including psoriasis, some skin cancers, and even transplant patients. As the team leader Dr. Lau says, “The results from the pilot phase of this trial suggest that shining our narrow-band ultraviolet lights for a few minutes each day saved lives.”
The next step is to carry out a molecular analysis of blood from the patients to confirm how the mechanism works. Then there will be a bigger clinical trial to prove the findings statistically.
Autumn boosters for vulnerable Brits
The UK’s vaccine advisory group recommends vulnerable people get booster jabs in autumn 2022. The over-65s, people in care homes, frontline health and social care workers, plus the clinically vulnerable aged between 16 -64 will be offered a booster jab in the autumn.
It makes sense since experts say 2021’s autumn booster programme provided ‘excellent protection’ against severe covid. Right now there’s a spring booster available in the UK to those over 75, care home residents and people aged 12 or more who have suppressed immune systems. The governments in England, Scotland and Wales all say they’ll follow the autumn recommendations.
Keep everyone safe, do your bit
The experts say the pandemic is far from over in the UK and elsewhere. Right now it looks like we’re in a period where the virus isn’t quite so prevalent – so let’s try to keep it that way. There’s always a risk of a nasty new variant, and the more of us catch covid the worse the risk is. Use our UV lights to keep everyone at your place safe from covid and a load more pathogens, and do your bit to help the country stay safe into the future.
