Our UVC technology doesn’t just stop pathogens in their tracks. By doing so it helps prevent dangerous outbreaks of disease that end up making large numbers of people ill, affecting businesses and communities and threatening the vulnerable. Here’s a look at recent outbreaks of preventable disease.
Avian flu – The worst outbreak in decades
The latest outbreak of avian flu doesn’t affect humans but it’s a particularly infectious variant of H5N1 and has caused Europe’s worst ever bird flu outbreak in decades. It could even lead to the extinction of some species of seabirds, whose breeding colonies have been hit hard since the current outbreak kicked off in 2021.
As the government website says: “There are no detected severe human cases associated with influenza A H5N1 in the UK, but severe human cases have been reported internationally. There is insufficient information to judge the risk of asymptomatic or mild disease due to limited testing in human contacts of infected birds.”
In April this year there was an outbreak of human infection caused by avian flu A (H5N1) in Chile, so it can happen. There was also an outbreak of Avian Flu A (H3N8) in China. The disease has already been found in seals and otters. We’re fortunate that, so far, bird flu hasn’t found a reliable and fast way to species-hop between birds and humans and can’t turn into an epidemic or pandemic. We hope it never does.
The WHO’s latest official outbreaks
We’ve taken a look at the WHO website to see what’s been circulating in the past couple of months. April and May saw the Marburg virus let loose in Equatorial Guinea and Tanzania, acute hepatitis in South Sudan, Measles in Ethiopia and Indonesia, and Lassa Fever and Diphtheria in Nigeria, along with circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 in Burundi and Indonesia.
Covid is no longer a threat according to the WHO
Here’s some big news from 5th May. It’s good to know that the WHO Director General says covid is
“now an established and ongoing health issue which no longer constitutes a public health emergency of international concern”. On the other hand experts say we need to remain vigilant because of the spread of the highly contagious new Arcturus variant, currently mostly affecting India.
The common cold runs rampant in the UK
UK scientists have warned of a 'severe risk' of catching a cold at the moment. Nine million Brits are already suffering from the common cold virus, which is spreading fast like it usually does.
Britain’s gastric flu outbreak
The nation is also in the middle of a big gastric flu outbreak affecting people from Scotland down to the south coast.
Measles cases are on the rise
Cases of measles are on the rise in England. Public health experts are asking children, teens and adults to take up free vaccinations against measles, which can kill. If you’re old enough to have had measles as a child you’ll know how awful it can be, and how poorly it can make you. And it isn’t just the UK at risk. Experts are seeing a rise in measles in many countries, partly because vaccinations were interrupted by covid and partly because of people being ‘vaccine hesitant’.
If it’s a pathogen, our tech kills it
If it’s a pathogen, our Ultra Violet light tech will kill it... fast. There’s no escape for viruses, bacteria, spores, moulds and more, however serious the diseases they cause. It even makes short work of Ebola, one of the most frightening viral threats of recent years.
If you’d like to keep your business, employees and customers safe from infections, it’s quick and easy to fit our units and they cost next to nothing to run, being LED-powered.
Let’s talk.
