So-called 'freedom day' took place last Monday in England. The country has ended most of the covid restrictions that were in place. At the same time cases continue to rise and many people, children included, are still not vaccinated. No wonder so many experts are calling the relaxation of restrictions an ‘unethical experiment’.
The worldwide covid-19 death toll has now exceeded 4.13 million, with more than 192.7 million cases officially recognised. Johns Hopkins University, in the USA, still predicts the true number of cases will be 'much higher'.
Decontaminating molecular diagnostic tools with UVC
Thanks to The Scientist website for reporting on the UVC experts at Phoseon, a company approached by a healthcare provider to help decontaminate molecular diagnostic tools. Now the project is complete, having creating the world’s biggest ever UVC LED decontamination system. The news means healthcare manufacturers should be able to scale production up without compromising the results – in this particular case a vital COVID-19 reverse transcriptase-PCR test kit.
The development is being hailed as an 'industry-changing solution' that brings 'speed and ease' to the decontamination process. It also maximises disinfection, increases productivity, and reduces costs. It looks like UVC LED decontamination brings a real solution to long-standing challenges around packaging and manufacturing vulnerable materials, which can also be applied to more sectors including pharmaceuticals and food safety.

How longer gaps between jabs delivers better immunity
Waiting longer between the first and second Pfizer/BioNTech jabs boosts your immune response, or so says one study. The research measured coronavirus antibody responses in 503 healthcare workers in England. They were given two doses of the vaccine at different intervals from late 2020 to early 2021, back when the Alpha strain was the biggest threat. Then they compared a 3 week gap with a 10 week gap. People who had a longer gap between jabs generated more neutralising antibodies.
Bearing the more infectious Delta variant in mind the scientists recommend an 8 week gap might be the best interval. The UK government extended the gap between Pfizer/BioNTech jabs to 12 weeks in December 2020, but on 15th July NHS England said it wanted people to bring their second jab forwards so the gap was no longer than 8 weeks.
Covid goes mad in England
Coronavirus infections rose sharply in all four nations, now they're falling a little bit. But those in the know warn that the current drop doesn't reflect the impact of Freedom Day, since there's always a gap between new freedoms and new infections. All we can do at this stage is hang on, see what happens, and hope for the best.
The latest random swab testing survey from the Office for National Statistics says around 1 in 75 of people in England had the virus during the week up to 17th July, up from 1 in 95 the week before. Scotland was 1 in 80, Ireland was 1 in 170 and Wales was 1 in 210.
Covid news from around the world
The countries that stopped covid in its tracks early and kept it away for months are still struggling to cope, revealing how very infectious Delta really is.
Until recently Australia had made it through 2021 without a single death from locally acquired covid-19. They'd banned international visitors and quarantined every Australian returning from overseas. June's fresh outbreak began with a Sydney limousine driver transporting international aircrew. Greater Sydney has been in lockdown since 26th June but the case numbers are still rocketing. This is the worst outbreak down under since 2020.
New Zealand is closing its travel bubble with all of Australia for 8 weeks minimum thanks to the boom in Australian cases. Qantas and Air New Zealand will cancel most services between Australia and New Zealand from the end of July.
The EU gives the green light to Moderna for kids
There's a massive gap in our national immunity, and it's because children haven't been vaccinated yet. Now the EU's medicines regulator has approved the Moderna jab for kids aged 12 and over. The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine has already been given the green light for children aged 12 and over.
Israel raises worries about Delta vaccination
Israel’s health ministry says studies suggest the Pfizer/BioNTech jab is less effective at preventing infection and symptoms caused by Delta. But all the same, while the jab is only 40% effective against Delta infection and symptoms, it is still 91.4% effective in preventing severe illness.
Is there an end in sight?
Are we coming to the end of covid? The short answer is 'no'. There's still no sign we're coming to the end of the pandemic. If you want to keep people and places safe, you still need to disinfect... and the only truly affordable, practical way to disinfect against the virus reliably without employing expensive teams of cleaners and using nasty chemicals is UVC LED covid disinfection.
