“The reason that so many people are receiving notifications is simple, we have a highly transmissible virus that is being allowed to spread throughout the country with the bare minimum of mitigation.” So says Stephen Griffin from the University of Leeds, one of more than 1200 scientists backing a letter in the Lancet criticising the government’s plan to lift most coronavirus restrictions despite rising cases. Here's the coronavirus news.
The truth about the Pingdemic
England's 'dangerous experiment' continues. Weekly coronavirus cases and alerts from the NHS app in England are both rising. But there's nothing wrong with the app. The app is functioning in the exact way it was designed to work, revealing who has been in contact with an infected person and advising them to obey the law – which means self isolating. The only thing that's different? Infection rates are spiralling.
Against a landscape like this, seen by many as an extremely unwise social experiment, the risks you take are all down to you and your own judgement. As people who are genuinely following the science, we're appealing to everyone to remain cautious and do what you can to keep protecting others.
In the meantime growing numbers of British businesses, including supermarkets, shops, public transport networks and the police, are all reporting staff shortages thanks to so many people being pinged. The government says it's going to release a small number of essential jobs for which fully vaccinated staff can be exempt from self-isolation. But this can, in turn, lead to more infections. And more infections means the virus has more chances to change itself so it's less likely to be stopped by vaccination.
China refuses yet another investigation
A number of highly respected studies have already revealed the extreme unlikelihood of the virus being created – then escaping from – a lab in Wuhan. But some people want to keep on looking anyway, keen to apportion blame. Now China has put its foot down, refusing a World Health Organization plan for the second phase of an investigation into the origin of the pandemic. The next phase was due to carry out audits of labs and markets but the vice minister of China’s national health commission told reporters that the plan “in some aspects, disregards common sense and defies science”.
Biden goes in hard on the unvaccinated and says kids under 12 could be vaccinated
In the USA, where a worryingly large percentage of the population is refusing to get vaccinated, Joe Biden is going in hard. The accusations of 'selfishness' are starting to fly, and a two tier society – the vaccinated versus the non-vaccinated – is starting to emerge. Biden says children under 12 might be able to get vaccinated by the end of August at the earliest. Both Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna kicked off trials in children during March 2021, and the results will be released over the next few months.
