A huge survey of the oceans has revealed 5000 new viruses we didn’t know about before. At the same time melting glaciers and permafrost could easily be the source of new and potentially deadly pathogens, surfaced by climate change.
Everyone is much more aware of viruses, bacteria and other pathogens than ever before, and that’s a very good thing. So what’s the latest news about the covid pandemic? As it turns out, the UK appears to be on the brink of another wave.
UK covid hospital cases are rising again
A few days ago we saw reports that at the end of May, weekly covid deaths in England and Wales had fallen to the lowest level since July 2021, with 410 deaths registered in the seven days to May 27th. Now it looks like covid-led hospital admissions are going up again, leading experts to warn the nation about another wave.
The NHS is concerned about the number of people in England admitted to hospital with covid, which is beginning to grow. The analysis comes from John Roberts of the Covid Actuaries group, revealing hospital admissions had ‘stopped falling’. The numbers from last week showed weekly admissions up by 4% per cent across England on 5th June, the latest data available, up a third in the North East and Yorkshire.
There are also reports from Scotland of over a thousand new covid cases in just one week at the beginning of June. The seven day average number of infections for the week ending 5th June was 1181, over 25% more than the week before.
Does this mean we’re in for another covid wave? Experts say yes, we could be, but there’s no way to tell how widespread or how serious it’ll be if so.
Covid cases jump in China, Singapore, Middle East and South East Asia
Covid cases are ramping up in Shanghai, where 3 million people are due to be locked down again. And thanks to almost 200 cases linked to a popular 24 hour Beijing bar, China is once again struggling to maintain its zero covid policy. At the same time the WHO reports that last week, the number of new coronavirus cases and deaths reported worldwide fell everywhere except the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
Moderna’s new booster increases covid immunity
Moderna says its new two-strain Covid booster jab increases immunity against the omicron variant. They’re the first to reveal preliminary results from a clinical trial of a vaccine targeted at omicron. But the study was only small and the results can’t be confirmed quite yet. Let’s hope the results of larger studies bear out those of the original tests.
Holiday destinations drop their covid test rules
Popular holiday destinations have begun scrapping their covid travel rules in preparation for the summer holiday season. Now you can fly to the USA without a negative test, and Turkey has scrapped its covid vaccine entry requirements. At the same time the Biden administration recently warned that the USA will soon run out of money to pay for COVID vaccines, treatments and tests.
The long covid treatment postcode lottery
The UK is seeing calls from the nursing profession to improve long covid research since 'existing services are woefully inadequate', and people are currently facing a 'postcode lottery' of care. There are worries over the way some clinics treat Long Covid as a physical problem, while the majority still see it as psychological – which it definitely is not.
