In a week when a new variant of HIV, dubbed VB, has been announced, our UV light disinfection technology is more important than ever before. Luckily, while the new HIV virus variant is more infectious than original HIV, it’s treatable. Like many other nasty and often deadly viruses, including original HIV, it’s on the kill list for our UVC Silent Guardian lights. Give them a few minutes and they kill off every virus the light touches, on surfaces and in the air. Here’s the latest covid news from around the world.
Unvaccinated US military personnel discharged
In the USA soldiers who haven’t been vaccinated against covid are being discharged instantly because they ‘pose a risk to the force and jeopardise readiness’. The order affects army soldiers, reserve staff on active duty, and cadets. So far 90 or so US military members have died of covid. The USA’s air force has already discharged 27 unvaccinated people and their navy has discharged 45 unvaccinated sailors. Covid disinfection with UV light would help the US military steer clear of covid.
Some countries begin to lift restrictions, others lock down
Sweden is set to lift all its covid restrictions even though they’re still seeing about 36,000 new daily cases. Denmark has already done the same, the first EU nation to lift all restrictions. They are still seeing 40,000 to 50,000 new infections every day but hope high levels of vaccination in the country will avoid a spike in hospitalisations. In both nations, UVC covid disinfection tech will help businesses to keep people safe.
In the UK we saw 55,000 or so new cases on 6th February, and a total of just under 600,000 over the previous 7 days. UVC light disinfection will play a vital part in keeping covid under better control in future.
New Zealand is going to re-open its borders in phases, letting some vaccinated citizens and visa holders return without quarantine in state isolation facilities from 27th February. Overseas vaccinated travellers and some skilled workers will be let in from 13thMarch, followed by 5000 or so international students from 12th April. Covid disinfection tech will support a safer, covid-free future over there, too.
Tonga is set to enter lockdown after five cases were discovered, the first instance of community transmission in the country. Until now they’ve only had one case. And in Russia on 1st February they suffered the highest daily number of new coronavirus cases, 125,836. Russia only has a 50% national vaccination rate so it’s a worrying situation. In Russia UVC disinfection for covid could also prove a vital weapon in the fight against runaway infections.
Trial gives covid to young adults
In the UK a new trial has deliberately infected younger people with covid. 36 volunteers aged between 18 and 29 were given a low dose of the virus through their nose. The virus used was from someone who got covid early in the pandemic, before we had any new variants of concern to worry about. Eighteen became infected, 16 of whom had a cold-like runny rose, sore throat, cough, fever or headache, most of which weren’t on the original symptoms list. 13 people lost their sense of taste and smell temporarily. Symptoms arrived within 42 hours, a much shorter average incubation than the 2-14 days estimates we were given at the time.
The virus stayed in the volunteers’ throats for 40 hours, turning up in the nose after around 58 hours. Peak levels of the virus were higher in the nose, which shows how important face coverings are at preventing the spread – as long as they cover both the mouth and nose.
