In the beginning there was a lot of talk about when we ‘get back to normal’, and discussions around what might happen ‘after the virus’. Now we’re seeing fewer of those conversations as it becomes clear Covid-19 won’t be going away any time soon, if at all.
Science predicts that, like the flu, the coronavirus will circulate the world’s population for the foreseeable future. And that means, even if we do eventually get an effective vaccine on the go, we’re going to have to learn to live with Covid.
The old world we knew and loved has gone. So what might the brave new world we’re entering eventually look like? Could it end up a lot better? Maybe it’s time to embrace change.
The old world wasn’t perfect!
There was plenty wrong with the old world, of course; runaway climate change, terrible inequalities around the planet, mass extinctions on the cards, and a newly-global economy struggling hard to find its feet. No wonder so many people are hoping the new world might be a better place for all of us, not just the few.
Shifting sands, positive change
We could see a Basic Universal Income paid in some countries, where everyone gets a sum of money designed to keep body and soul together. Several nations are testing the idea, which many scientists and economic experts believe will give back struggling people their dignity, leaving behind a horribly complex benefits system that forces too many of our less able citizens into long term poverty. A UBI could also slash the nation’s massive benefits budget.
All around the world people are finding better ways to do things. Pressure groups and those in power are looking into the potential for human-friendly, no-car cities, where the air is clean and it’s a pleasure, once more, to be a pedestrian. Around the world cities are planning to go greener, become more sustainable, and build more genuinely affordable homes.
Important conversations are taking place around kindness, and how being kind and altruistic benefits all of us. Scientists are promoting gratitude as a feeling that’s physically and mentally good for us. Mental health is something we can now talk freely about, not a no-no any longer. Altruism has been proven to make us feel fantastic. Community spirit is alive, well, and thriving.
UK cities are being rated by how progressive they are, examining things like gender gaps, pay gaps, traffic policies and recycling rates. Innovative new solar power projects are empowering women in Yemen. Footballers and other celebrities are using their fame as a driver for the common good.
The US election results, mostly fought on the virus, mean North America will rejoin the Paris Climate Accord as soon as the new president takes office. America’s voters have called time out on racism. Sarah McBride is set to take power as the first transgender state senator in the history of the USA. Florida has raised their minimum wage. And San Fran has approved a new tax regime designed to target inequality.
It’s fascinating how dramatic change in one area – the virus and its effects – is having an impact on all sorts of other walks of life. The potential for a much better world is there, in our grasp.
Positive news about keeping your business alive and kicking
On top of all this good news, we’ve just heard how the wavelength used in our highly effective UVC disinfection lights comes closer to the most efficient wavelength of all, proven to kill the virus faster than the usual wavelengths used by machines similar as ours, but not as good.
If you’d like to explore how our powerful UVC lights can keep your premises, safe and protect your customers, get in touch. We’re thrilled by the latest research – click here to read all about it – or get in touch.
We’re always glad to talk.
