“In the face of waning immunity and an ever-evolving virus, it is clear that herd immunity won’t be possible anywhere without better vaccines. Going into 2023, big questions remain over the long-term health impacts of the virus and the best way to manage successive waves of infection.”
(New Scientist magazine 22nd December 2022)
Welcome to 2023. We hope it’s a successful and profitable year for your business. So what’s the latest news on covid? You’d be forgiven for thinking the pandemic was mostly over. But as the quote at the top of this article reveals, we need to stay alert.
About the new normal
Humanity has settled in to the new normal, with most nations opening back up to trade and visitors by the end of 2022. It’s a natural reaction to almost three years of the pandemic, simply because it’s hard to stay on constant full alert. No wonder just 16 countries, including the USA, are still banning unvaccinated arrivals and only one European country, Kosovo, still has travel restrictions. England is in the process of lifting its remaining restrictions. From 24th February 2023 people testing positive won’t need to quarantine, but they’ll still need to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for at least 5 days.
In December China revealed plans to open up to a limited number of foreign visitors for the first time since 2020, although a PCR test will still be required. At the same time case numbers are rocketing. On 9th January a Chinese official said almost 90% of people in China's third most populated area have covid, and there are increasing reports about the country’s healthcare system in crisis.
We still need to be covid-alert
Yes, things have calmed down in many areas of the world. But it looks like we still need to be prepared. In Iight of the covid variant XBB.1.5, the most transmissible yet and nicknamed the ‘Kraken’ variant, it makes even more sense to be proactive rather than reactive if you run a business.
Without people, you don’t have a company. Workers make the business world go round. When your people are staying home because they’ve caught the latest variant and managed to give it to their colleagues, how will you keep the business going? What if a key staff member goes off sick then ends up with Long Covid, unable to work to their full capacity for weeks, months, even years? How fast can you get a replacement, assuming you can find someone suitable? How steep will their learning curve be, how long will it take the new person to get up to full speed?
Have you factored covid into your business risk assessment plans? If not, make 2023 the year you do so, and get protected to grab a competitive advantage.
