Christmas didn’t go too well for a lot of people when their supermarket turkeys and turkey products turned out to be rotten to the core... literally. There’s big trouble in the world of cheese. And the latest covid variant, JN1, is spreading fast for the new year. Luckily ultraviolet disinfection is by far the best way to keep food itself - as well as internal spaces in general - free from pathogens. Here’s the news.
Rotten turkeys ruin Christmas
While we like to keep our finger on the pulse, this time the news is making us feel slightly sick. It’s awful to hear that many Christmas dinners have been ruined thanks to ‘rotten’, ‘rancid’ and ‘slimy’ turkey and turkey products bought at Asda, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Aldi.
It isn’t a storage issue, since people are well versed in following the product instructions for meat to keep it clean, chilled and safe for consumption. Shoppers have had to throw birds costing as much as £60 in the bin because they were so mouldy and rotten they actually ‘stank’.
It happened to some consumers even though they’d ordered the birds well in advance and, of course, it was too late in most cases to go out and buy a replacement – even if people could’ve afforded to buy two turkeys.
Our ultraviolet disinfection units are essential in every foodservice and food production context, killing pathogens quickly wherever the light shines. But even they can’t stop sub-standard food getting through the nation’s quality defences in the first place.
Festive cheese E. Coli nightmares
Cheese has also had a grilling this week, pardon the pun. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has recalled a number of cheeses made by Mrs Kirkham's and later also recalled products from Route des Terroirs. If you’ve bought these cheeses, it’s probably best not to eat them:
It’s about more than chunks of cheese. The FSA says the cheeses might turn up in hampers or as an element in a ‘charcutier grazing platter’, which makes them a little harder to identify.
The products listed could be contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, AKA STEC, which comes with symptoms similar to flu – a high temperature, aching or painful muscles, the chills, nausea and vomiting, and diarrhoea. If you’re vulnerable you could end up with meningitis.
Our ultraviolet disinfection units kill E. Coli with ease, destroying the DNA and RNA inside it so it can’t do any harm. In our opinion every food production setting in the country deserves the clean, low-cost, easy to use power of UV disinfection to keep consumers safe.
What’s the latest on the JN1 covid variant?
It looks like the JN1 covid variant is on its way around the UK, partying along with the population. London is worst hit so far, with people aged 18-44 the worst hit, and the variant is spreading ‘rapidly’. The WHO is treating JN1 as a ‘variant of interest’ amid rising UK cases.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) says about 6.1% of Londoners had the virus mid-way through December, by far the worst area in the UK. In England and Scotland as a whole it’s about 4.2%, which doesn’t sound like a lot until you realise that’s one in 24 of us.
It’s a season thing. At this time of year diseases tend to spread faster because the cold weather and early dark keeps us indoors, and we’re travelling far and wide to hook up with family. Because respiratory viruses always spread particularly efficiently in a context like Christmas and New Year, the surge isn’t exactly unexpected.
The experts say please try to limit your contact with other people as much as possible if you have symptoms, especially if you’ll be around older or vulnerable people. Hopefully they’ll have had their booster and will be as well protected as possible, but it’s wise to keep them safe anyway.
JN1, like other covid variants, is quickly made harmless using our affordable, highly efficient, low-energy ultraviolet disinfection systems.
