As winter unfolds we’re seeing the usual suspects devastate communities, with flu and the common cold, norovirus, RSV and salmonella sending people home from work and school, invading hospitals, and bringing businesses to their knees. Here’s the news.
The common cold, RSV and more – And how to kill them
Sometimes it isn’t just about feeling awful for a couple of days – it’s a matter of life and death. The norovirus winter vomiting bug has closed four wards in a Middlesbrough hospital, the biggest outbreak the James Cook has seen for four or five years. People have been warned to avoid the hospital if they have symptoms, to keep vulnerable people safe.
Norovirus is transmitted via direct contact with poo, contaminated surfaces and airborne particles of vomit, all of which are pretty revolting. On the bright side our range of ultraviolet disinfection lamp light units kills all these nasty health threats quickly and efficiently. And that makes the affordable ultraviolet disinfection lamp price we charge an exciting prospect for any business wanting to keep staff, customers and everyone else healthy.
So is it norovirus... or not?
The thing about norovirus is, it’s easy to mistake for any number of illnesses with the same symptoms. Apparently, while there’s been an increase in people hospitalised with diarrhoea and vomiting, it isn’t necessarily a norovirus outbreak.
The UKHSA says they’re not seeing an unusual increase in norovirus cases this year, even though the numbers are quite high. In fact norovirus cases are 20% lower than the previous 5 year average for the time of year. It looks like norovirus hospitalisations are also down a bit this year. So while there’s definitely a much bigger burden on the NHS with diarrhoea and vomiting admissions, it isn’t necessarily norovirus.
Right now there’s an uptick in all the usual seasonal viruses: flu, norovirus, RSV, colds, whooping cough and a new covid variant. Together they’re putting a lot of pressure on the NHS, with flu admissions alone up 50% in a week.
A new covid variant on the loose – Meet JN.1
People are falling ill with a new descendant of Omicron, with 97,904 reported symptomatic cases at 6th December. The new sub-lineage is called JN.1, sub-categorised by the UKHSA because it has mutated enough to be interesting and because of its “increasing prevalence within the UK and international data”.
Apparently it’s the fastest-spreading variant in the UK, related to the BA.2.86 Omicron variant with one new mutation in its spike protein and several other mutations elsewhere. It has a current growth rate of 84.2% but the WHO isn’t calling it a Variant of Concern: they’re simply monitoring it.
JN.1 was first found in Luxembourg in August and has made it into 12 nations so far including the UK. On 4th December there were 302 sequenced cases in the UK (223 in England) out of 3618 cases worldwide.
JN.1’s symptoms are probably similar to other variants, and the same health advice applies: if you get serious symptoms, get medical help. You’ll probably get a temperature, runny nose, and headache, perhaps lose your sense of smell, and you might also get diarrhoea and stomach cramps. Experts also say it might take longer to recover from it, could cause more serious disease, and could be more infectious. The scientists are working on it but we don’t know the full story yet.
