The latest covid disinfection news – December 2021
The good news? Three covid vaccines used as boosters in a UK trial have proved safe, generating good, strong immune responses. The research involved 2878 adults aged 30 plus, all of whom had already been given two doses of Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine or Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine. The participants were given their boosters 10-12 weeks after their second jab.
The study measured antibodies and T cells in people’s blood. Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca all gave strong antibody and T cell responses, no matter which vaccine people had for their first two doses. It looks like people’s immunity increased, although nobody yet knows how well people are protected from infection or disease.
The trial took place back when alpha was the dominant UK variant in the UK. Those involved say that while the trial doesn’t reveal how effective boosters are against omicron,
“the T cell data is showing us that it does seem to be broader against all the variant strains, which gives us hope that a variant strain of the virus might be able to be handled, certainly for hospitalisation and death if not prevention of infection, by the current vaccine.”
PTSD affects UK health workers
The Royal College of Psychiatrists says there could be more than 230,000 new cases of post traumatic stress disorder in England thanks to the pandemic. They NHS Strategy Unit arrived at the number by forecasting new referrals for PTSD between 2020/21 and 22/23. Some covid patients who needed hospital care are at risk of PTSD, along with frontline healthcare staff. In fact 35% of covid patients who were on a ventilator and 40% of intensive care staff are suffering from PTSD symptoms.
Omicron travels the world
So far omicron has made it into at least 24 countries. It looks like the new variant is driving a spike in South Africa infections, and is already the dominant variant over there. On 1st December South Africa counted 8561 new covid cases, almost double the number from the day before. The country’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases said the rise in cases isn’t down to increased testing.
Omicron accounts for 74% of 249 virus genomes sequenced by them during November. There are worries the new variant might be able to ‘get around immunity’ to some extent, but vaccinated people should still be protected against severe illness. The World Health Organization says it’s too early to tell if the new variant is more transmissible than delta.
In the meantime vaccine-makers are already adapting existing vaccines to fight omicron better, but by the time they get there the variant will probably be endemic. And the good news? As far as anyone knows, nobody has yet died of the new variant.
Unvaccinated people are more likely catch covid, and a lot more likely to die
In the latest study into the unvaccinated in the USA, scientists have revealed unvaccinated people are around 14 times more likely to die of covid than vaccinated people. The unvaccinated are also six times more likely to test positive for the virus in the first place. The picture is the same in the UK.
