As the annual festivities approach, people are starting to wonder what’ll happen at Christmas. Here’s some of the latest covid news, fresh from the world’s science community, to help you make wise decisions.
Unvaccinated? You’re 14 times more likely to die
If you’re not vaccinated you’re at 14 times more risk of dying from covid than people who are fully vaccinated. That’s what the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have figured out, and the picture in the UK is similar.
In the UK one expert says that covid is ‘no longer a disease of the vaccinated’. It’s unvaccinated people who end up in intensive care. And Andrew Pollard, director of the Oxford Vaccine Group at the University of Oxford, calls the sight of unvaccinated people fighting for breath in hospital an ‘ongoing horror’.
New lateral flow advice from the UK government
If you’re in England and want to go somewhere indoors and crowded, the government says you should take a lateral flow test first. If you’re visiting a high risk person, you might also want to consider taking a test first to keep them safe. This is the first time we’ve been officially advised to have a test before some activities.
12 – 15 year olds are safe with Pfizer for at least 4 months
Good news – Pfizer/BioNTech is apparently 100% per cent effective in 12-15 year olds for at least four months after their second jab. The phase 3 trial revealed no cases in people who had their two doses, and no serious health concerns have turned up, either.
The proven power of face masks
Mask wearing is one of the most effective covid health measures for preventing the virus spreading.
It provides a 53% reduction in the incidence of the disease. Handwashing is highly effective, although the size of the study was too small to be certain about. Physical distancing comes with a 25% reduction in the risk of catching covid. These ‘effective and sustainable’ public health measures sit at the heart of what it will take to beat covid, along with full vaccination.
The world struggles under more waves
The EU is struggling to cope with a number of waves. Germany is sinking under its fourth wave, as is Austria, now in its fourth lockdown. Ireland is seeing more cases and in China they’ve just applied strict covid rules in preparation for the Winter Olympics in 2022. Over in the USA Anthony Fauci has fired a shot across official bows, claiming time is running out to prevent a dangerous surge. Coronavirus cases in the US are rising again, and they’re seeing more than 100,000 new cases a day. Thanksgiving probably didn’t help. He says every US adult who’s eligible for a booster jab should get one as the country heads into the holiday season.
Are you ready to make a wise UVC covid disinfection decision yet?
Every great business has a USP, a Unique Selling Point. Making sure your premises is frequently disinfected with lovely, powerful, clean UVC light means you kill off a large array of horrid pathogens including Ebola, SARS, MERS and covid in no time. If, like scientists, you can’t see the end of the covid tunnel happening any time soon, now might be the time to get a robot and use it as another USP – ‘we are not like other businesses. We are protecting our people and customers in every way we can’.
