In the USA three people have died and almost 100 have needed hospital treatment. Around 230 recent salmonella cases have been reported across 38 states. The disease was exported from the USA to Canada in a shipment of pre-prepared melon slices, triggering 129 cases, five deaths and 44 hospitalisations there.

What is salmonella?
Salmonella affects the intestinal tract. Some people don’t get symptoms, others do. If you’ve had it you’ll know how horrible it is: it’s possible to suffer for more than a week as you first feel absolutely exhausted, then develop a fever, violent runs, and acute intestinal pain.

The UK’s ongoing salmonella nightmare
The UK is in the midst of a surge of salmonella cases right now, and it’s all because the checks that used to take place on food before it entered the UK are no longer happening thanks to Brexit.
The NFU (National Farmers Union) says recurring waves of the disease are coming in via improperly-checked meat, poultry and eggs, with Poland named as a key source. The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) is investigating. They say several cases so far have been laid at the feet of eggs produced in Poland then used to cook food in UK restaurants and cafes.
Previously, the EU would have been monitoring imports to make sure the quality hits the right levels. Three years without these checks and balances is beginning to show in an unusually high number of ‘recurring incidents of salmonella’.
The fact that, in September, the government delayed plans for post-Brexit checks on imports from the EU for the fifth time isn’t helping. The new date for checks to begin is the end of April next year, but if things carry on in the same way it could be delayed again.
The NFU has been pressuring the UK government, so far to no avail, to support our farmers while they’re facing the extra costs, competitive challenges and horrific amounts of paperwork that EU members don’t have to handle. In the meantime the FSA is in talks with experts in Poland and the EU to improve the quality of foods imported into the UK.
