In the UK the summer holiday season is looking just as precarious as ever. We're not sure whether the covid restrictions will stay for another few weeks or a lot longer, and there are hints there's another big wave underway. Elsewhere in the world other countries are struggling to cope with new waves of their own. Here's the latest covid news.
The UK's position in the death toll stakes
This week the death toll stats place the UK at number five again. The worst death toll of all is the USA, second is Brazil, and India is currently the third worst. Mexico follows on from India, leaving the UK with the fifth worst covid death toll in the world, a position we're clearly having difficulty shifting.
Worldwide covid stats
New vaccination insight
A new piece of research reveals the risk of catching covid after being vaccinated drops dramatically 21 days after your first dose.
Israel 'lends' doses to Palestine
Israel says it will 'lend' 1 - 1.4 million Pfizer/BioNTech covid vaccine doses to Palestine to speed up the vaccination process across the West Bank and Gaza. The vaccines would have expired otherwise, which would have been a terrible waste, so it's good news. At the same time Palestine will send the same number of doses back to Israel between September and October, when they get their supplies through from the WHO COVAX scheme.
New German vaccine only has a 47% success rate
The German company CureVac's covid vaccine is, sadly, only 47% effective, or so says a large trial of the new vaccine. The company says more than 50% of the coronavirus cases in the trial were caused by 'variants of concern', not the original variant, which is worrying in itself.
Mandatory vaccination for care home staff
The UK government says vaccinations for care home staff will be mandatory, a decision affecting around 1.5 million people who work in social care in England. Employer and staff organisations are not happy, saying the decision might force people who don't want a vaccination to leave their jobs. At the same time a study suggests people who feel forced to vaccinate are less likely to have their jabs than people who are carefully, gently educated about the benefits. The saying, ' stuck between a rock and a hard place' comes to mind.
Scientists say stop daily contact tests in schools
Scientists are asking the UK government to stop daily contact testing trials English schools. The open letter of appeal was received by the education minister Gavin Williamson and was also published in the British Medical Journal, the respected magazine of the medical sector.
The trials were meant to evaluate the effectiveness of regular lateral flow testing in schools. The hope was the tests could replace ten day isolation for the friends and families of pupils who catch the virus. But the scientists say the risks outweigh their benefits, because lateral flow tests can miss early stage infections so easily. And that means they might even make the spread of the delta variant even worse.
Japanese states of emergency will be lifted for the Olympics
Japan says it'll lift Tokyo's current state of emergency, as well as eight others, for the Olympics. But they'll also maintain social distancing measures, for example keeping spectator numbers low at big events. The games kick off on 23rd July and the Japanese prime minister Yoshihide Suga is appealing to people to watch the fun on TV at home to help stop the virus spreading.
The uncertainty continues
All this leaves us just as uncertain about the future as ever. Luckily there's one certainty to hang your hat on if your business is affected by the virus. There's no reason to suspect, no matter how many variants arise, that any of them will be able to survive being blasted with beautiful, lethal UVC light. It kills off the worst hospital acquired infections, it makes Ebola harmless, and under the right levels of UV light covid doesn't stand a chance. The latest research proves it yet again.
