Around the world thousands of brilliant scientists are doing everything they can to discover cures, treatments, and even better vaccines to support the ongoing fight against covid. Sadly we’re also seeing plenty of nutty cures, crazy pronouncements, and out-there ideas around how to steer clear of covid and treat it if you get it. There’s even a Wikipedia page detailing all the many
unproven treatment methods against covid. So let’s look at some of the latest and craziest anti-covid ideas from around the world.
Don’t pin your hopes on convalescent plasma
It’s a thought. You take convalescent plasma from people who have recently been infected with covid, then you inject it into yourself and lo and behold... nothing happens. The World Health Organisation confirms convalescent plasma is definitely not an effective treatment for covid 19.
Eccentric covid treatments that don’t work
There’s a huge and growing list of substances and methods people have tried to stay safe from covid or recover from it. Take the salt water sprays given out at a church in South Korea. Everyone used the same unclean bottle and 46 people were infected.
Vinegar was widely promoted in Brazil but there is no evidence that the acetic acid it contains has any effect on covid. Home-made hand sanitiser made from rum, bleach and fabric softener was a trend in the Philippines for a while, but because mixing bleach and alcohol results in chloroform, which is toxic when inhaled or touches the skin, it was a very bad idea.
The colour white has no effect on the virus at all, despite a widely-shared Facebook post claiming white hankies were the only thing that would keep people safe. Volcanic ash from the Taal volcano in the Philippines doesn’t kill the virus, either. And making DIY face masks out of wet wipes is a very silly idea. Don’t do it.
Forget the drug abuse route!
Don’t bother buying the three hundred US dollar Dark Web treatment containing speed, cocaine and nicotine. It won’t cure covid or stop you getting it. Cocaine on its own doesn’t work, either. Cannabis doesn’t cure covid no matter what one popular Youtube video claimed. And despite what Fox News said at one point, nor does CBD oil.
You can boil Betel leaves until you’re blue in the face but it won’t help you avoid covid. Nor does the incredibly nasty substance industrial ethanol, which is a lot more likely to kill you than cure you. Around 300 Iranian people died trying, and 1000 were hospitalised.
Commercial products that don’t work against covid
It’s worrying to see a growing list of commercially-available preparations and even lifestyle choices being touted as useful when they’re simply fraudulent and unproven. And it’s sad to know some people would rather try these than have a vaccination that has been proven, by billions of people, to work.
None of these will help you avoid covid or cure it:
The truth is...
The only way, so far, to stay safe from a serious bout of covid is to have your vaccinations and boosters. The only way to avoid catching it in the first place is to wear a mask and socially distance. And the only way to kill the virus off in minutes rather than hours or days is to use clean, pure LED UVC light at a certain wavelength, for a certain amount of time. If you’d like to add an extra layer of safety to your business in addition to distancing and mask-wearing, let’s talk.
