How to stop Norovirus
Simple, low cost infection control

At this time of year Norovirus arrives. Schools are one of the major melting pots where it takes hold and spreads. Norovirus is a leading cause of vomiting and diarrhoea, and a common worldwide cause of food borne illness. People of all ages can be infected with norovirus, which spreads very easily and quickly. But the impact can be more serious than you might imagine, and its negative influence spreads wider than you may think.
The personal and business impact of Norovirus
Say your child picks up norovirus at school or nursery. They’ll have to stay home while they recover, which means either one parent has to take time off work, or they’ll have to find someone else to be there while the child recovers.
One parent off work can mean the family income is affected, especially when the job doesn’t come with sick pay, for example when they work in the gig economy. The businesses parents work for can suffer as well, either because productivity goes down, the workload increases for the people left to cope, or almost everyone goes off sick.
The business might be forced to bring in temps to cover the absences, which costs extra money. Because it’s so infectious a child’s siblings might fall ill, as can the parents at home caring for the sick child. And if the whole company goes off sick with it, the business can soon start to run into difficulties.
Luckily there’s a fast, affordable, proven way to battle Norovirus infections, killing the virus in the air and on surfaces using clean, powerful UVC light at a special wavelength identified by science as the most effective for the job.
As you can imagine it’s well worth avoiding this nasty illness that pops up to cause chaos every winter. Let’s take a look at norovirus, why it makes us ill, the symptoms, and how UVC disinfection is the lower-cost and fastest way to get it under control.
How do you catch Norovirus
Direct contact with someone with norovirus, food or drink contaminated with norovirus, and touching surfaces contaminated with it are the most common ways it spreads. Perhaps an infected person touches food with their bare hands, the food is placed on a countertop with poo or vomit particles on it, or tiny vomit particles land on it from the air. Food grown in contaminated water is less of a risk, but it also happens.
What are the symptoms of Norovirus?
Norovirus inflames your stomach or intestines. Also called acute gastroenteritis, it takes 12 to 48 hours for the illness to make itself felt. Until the symptoms arrive people have no idea they’ve been infected. You can be infectious before symptoms appear as well as long after they disappear.
Norovirus can make you feel absolutely dreadful, with days of vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, headaches and an aching body. This can make you dehydrated, which can be particularly dangerous for young children, older people, and those whose health isn’t good. Children can get so dehydrated they cry without actual tears.
You might also see a sharp decrease in urination, a very dry throat and mouth, and dizziness when you stand up.
Most of us recover within three days, during which we are highly infectious. But we can still spread it to others for three days or so after that, and some people have been known to stay infectious for as long as two weeks after the symptoms go.
Like the common cold, flu and covid, you can get Norovirus every year or more than once a year simply because the virus constantly mutates to avoid the immune system. There’s also a genetic component to the number of times you catch it and the severity of your illness.
How to kill Norovirus in schools
What is the best way to keep school children healthy, kill Norovirus, stop it spreading, and as a result keep businesses going this winter?
As you can see on our UVC kill list, norovirus is just one of a large group of viruses and other health threats rendered harmless by our special fixed UVC light units and portable units.
- Kills pathogens in the air and on surfaces by damaging their DMA and RNA so badly they can’t reproduce
- Kills a host of other viral health threats: the common cold, flu, covid and more
- Keeps people of every age safe from infection in schools, colleges, universities, nursery schools and every other setting where the Norovirus likes to take root
- Low cost to buy
- Low energy usage
- Highly effective
- Simple to use
- Proven science used for decades to keep healthcare settings pathogen-free

Q: How has using the Silent Guardian helped you?
A:"Our top priority in opening the school in September 2020 was the safety of our students and staff. My office was identified as one of our main priorities due to the volume of students and staff that would come through daily. After installation of our fixed UV fitting, I easily felt more comfortable being able to blast the room multiple times during the day between patients. We did also introduce portable UV systems to clean the classrooms in the school and it has been a great addition to our sanitising process. Although I do not have the exact numbers, I do believe that not only did the purifier help with no outbreaks of COVID 19, but there was also a reduced number of stomach bugs and colds and flus in general. The team has always supported us with any technical issues and had a rapid customer response”.
