Vaccine-preventable infections break out at colleges and universities because young people spend so much time together, share living and learning spaces, and have such wide groups of friends. Here we take a look at the common diseases in these settings, what universities already do to mitigate the risks, and how your uni can do even better at keeping staff and students safe.
What diseases turn up in universities?
Norovirus, measles, mumps, rubella, meningitis, TB, seasonal flu, infectious mononucleosis, also known as glandular fever or kissing disease, are all possible in a higher education setting. TB and meningitis in particular can be very dangerous, and the others can make vulnerable people poorly.
The disinfection challenges of a higher education setting
The challenges involved in keeping higher and further education settings safe and clean go further than the human factor. It’s also about the spaces people gather in. Lecture halls and language labs, art studios, video units, computer rooms and science labs are more than just high traffic, they’re also high touch and some contain expensive equipment. It’s notoriously hard, complex and costly to keep these areas disinfected the regular way with human cleaners and chemical cleaning products.
Advice for university students and employees
Universities and colleges are already well clued up with advice for staff and students. People are advised to keep their jabs up to date, follow basic hygiene, be aware of the risks of disease and who needs extra protection, and keep shared facilities clean.
It’s the college’s job to encourage students to have vaccinations, register with a doctor, and advise ill students stay away from lessons and social events. All this is usually handled by a special Student Wellbeing team, whose members keep everyone informed and, if it’s needed, can collect essential information about who’s been in contact with whom.
The role UVC plays in university and college disinfection
UVC technology already plays a major role in keeping healthcare settings safe from viruses and other pathogens. And our fixed and portable UVC LED units give educators a proven long term solution to help keep students and staff safe from an enormous list of health threats. We’ve even built unique Bacterial Simulation Software to visualise the germicidal irradiation effect our UVC LED lights will have on a given space using a combination of time, intensity and distance. This, and the simple design and fitting, makes our units easy to use.
The units operate at a 50mj/cm sq disinfection level that kills the most pathogens remarkably quickly. It also means you seriously reduce the risks behind using harmful chemical sprays, which can themselves cause respiratory issues.
Last but not least our units come with multiple safety features including motion sensors, sound sensors, timers, light displays, time clocks, and visible purple UVA, so it’s easy to keep people safe.
