There’s a brand new variant of the Covid-19 virus stalking the UK. Other countries are quickly closing their borders to UK travellers in an effort to keep it from spreading further. The indications are the new variant isn’t any more deadly, but it certainly spreads faster and it’s also a lot more infectious. Some say it’s over 70% more infectious than the original.
That’s the problem with viruses. The more people they infect, the greater the risk of them morphing into something even worse. We’re actually fortunate that the new variant doesn’t make people even more poorly than the original. While it’s bad enough, this story could have turned out absolutely catastrophic.
The new variant, by the way, drives home – yet again – how important it is for everyone to get vaccinated.
The fewer people are vaccinated, the more people will catch it, and the more likely it is that we’ll see another, potentially lethal new variant evolving.
Here’s what we know about the new Covid variant so far.
About the UK’s new Covid variant
Why did a new variant evolve in the UK rather than somewhere else? It’s simply bad luck. It could’ve happened anywhere in the world but as we’ve mentioned, the more people catch Covid in the first place, the more chances the virus has to mutate. If a country isn’t doing very well at controlling the virus, there’s always going to be a risk of mutation.
Numbers of the new variant are, according to Matt Hancock, growing so much faster than cases of the existing virus that it is already ‘out of control’. Thankfully, so far, it looks like there’s nothing – from a genetic analysis standpoint – to suggest this variant is more likely to cause serious disease.
What about the Pfizer vaccine, currently being rolled out in the UK? Scientists say it is ‘highly unlikely’ this mutation won’t respond to any of the vaccines that’ve been approved so far, which is reassuring.
Do our UVC LED lights kill the new Covid variant?
The short answer is ‘yes’. Our LED UVC Covid-killing technology kills off a wide range of coronaviruses including MERS, SARS, Ebola, the current Covid virus, and almost certainly the new variant, whose DNA doesn’t differ that widely from the original Covid virus.
When you invest in our machines you quickly create a clean, safe space for your customers to enjoy. And that means your business is future-proofed to an unusually high level in these hard-to-predict times. You have an LED UVC machine? Then you can welcome people, keep your business’s down-time to a minimum, and potentially make all the difference between survival and permanent closure.
NHSE/I places its trust in our Covid killing technology
Our machines are so effective that NHS England and Ireland has invited us to their ground-breaking conference and exhibition event showcasing Covid expertise and the new technologies being created to tackle the virus. Hundreds of people will attend, all tasked with making sure our healthcare systems react to future viruses in the right way.
The event is called Infection Prevention and Control 2021
and it takes place in April 2021.
Will we see you there?
