Hospitals have been using UV to kill pathogens for a very long time. Their effectiveness in helping to save lives by eliminating pathogens and disabling viruses has long been documented. Hospital Acquired Infections ( HAIs ) have been dramatically reduced where proper hygiene and UVC technology is applied in tandem.
The Covid-19 crisis has thrown UV under the spotlight, and as a result there's a lot of misinformation out there and a lot of non-science based noise. It is one of the rare occasions where published papers can actually do more harm than good because white papers have been published on the back of out-dated reports when it comes to Covid 19.
Here's an insight into the very latest research, and the proof you need to feel confident in our highly effective germ-killing UV technology. It just goes to show how vitally important it is to take note of the very latest science, and avoid disinfection methods that don't work or are actually dangerous.
Aramark's report on Covid disinfection
Aramark is a respected US food service, facilities and uniform provider for education, healthcare, business, prisons and leisure across North America and 20 other countries including the UK and Europe. In a recent report into disinfection methods for Covid-19, they raised concerns about the use of UV light to kill the novel Coronavirus.
It's good to know Aramark is up to date with the science on fogging and misting, something we don't recommend, along with the WHO, the US Centers for Disease Control and the US Environmental Protection Agency. But at the same time it's disturbing to see Aramark dismissing UVC as a suitable agent against Covid. It appears they've based their opinions on a CDC report from May 2019 stating there's no evidence for the effectiveness of UVC against the virus. Sadly, their information is out of date.
June 2020 research from Boston University, USA proves UVC easily kills Covid
“Our test results show that above a specific dose of UV-C radiation, viruses were completely inactivated: in a matter of seconds we could no longer detect any virus.”
(Source: Boston University)
On June 16th 2020, Signify, a world leader in lighting, released news of the latest research in collaboration with Boston University. They've proved that UVC can easily kill Covid at at 22mj/cm sq over 25 seconds (6 second @ 5mj -99%). Obviously the moment we saw the research we wrote to the VP of Aramark in Philadelphia, USA, complimenting him on the white paper but informing him of the latest findings!
As the test results reveal, the virus could no longer be detected after just seconds of exposure to the right type and level of UVC. This research validates the effectiveness of UVC light sources to inactivate the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
As the report says:
“Since the start of the SARS CoV-2 pandemic, Dr. Anthony Griffiths, Associate Professor of Microbiology at Boston University School of Medicine and his team have been working on developing tools to support scientific advancement in this field.2 During their research they have treated inoculated material with different doses of UV-C radiation coming from a Signify light source and assessed the inactivation capacity under various conditions. The team applied a dose of 5mJ/cm2, resulting in a reduction of the SARS-CoV-2 virus of 99% in 6 seconds. Based on the data, it was determined that a dose of 22mJ/cm2 will result in a reduction of 99.9999% in 25 seconds.”
Make sure you get the latest, most accurate information and knowledge
Covid-19 is the biggest crisis to hit the modern world. But it also represents an opportunity for unscrupulous businesses to manufacture products that don't work, or are dangerous. In times like this it's absolutely essential to follow the science, and that means following the very latest research. You can rely on us to do exactly that. And if you'd like us to explain the science, we can do that for you as well.
