When covid first hit and we went into lockdown, the capital’s world-class theatre district fell apart. West End shows that had been on stage continually for years, even decades, closed their doors to audiences. Actors, musicians, orchestras, directors, choreographers and producers were sent home, with no idea if or when things would begin to re-open.
It has been a long, hard haul since then for the creative community, and the West End has suffered more than most. Now London’s theatreland is finally beginning to come back to life. So what’s the situation in the West End, what’s expected of you around proving your covid status, and is there anything more theatres can do to keep their audiences and their talent safe from the virus?
West End theatre covid entry details
Theatres are allowed to open at full capacity now, so what rules do they have in place? So far every theatre in London is recommending you wear a face covering unless you’re eating, drinking or officially exempt. Some theatres are asking audiences to bring proof they’re not infected, others are still busy making a final decision based on what happens next around the way the virus is spreading.
Right now there are three ways to prove you’re a safe bet, and you can do it all via your covid pass, the card you were given when you had your vaccinations. You can show your covid status either as a QR code or via the NHS app.
Check the covid rules at the theatre first
It’s wise to check with the venue first so you know exactly what you need to bring with you, and fully understand how the covid protocols will work before you turn up. You’ll find the details for each theatre on their official website, and they seem to vary. How come? Because some theatres, like the Harold Pinter, are small and intimate, others are absolutely huge, like the London Palladium, and every venue has its own unique layout with its own set of covid challenges.
Is there anything else West End theatres could be doing for audiences?
Can theatreland do any more to protect people? We think so. We’re the people behind one of the best covid disinfection robots around. It harnesses clean, low cost UVC light at a very specific wavelength to kill the virus wherever the light touches. It makes a lot more sense than hiring a permanent gang of human cleaners armed with expensive and often nasty chemicals, and it takes a surprisingly short time to disinfect a large space like an auditorium.
Do you manage a theatre or venue?
If you’d like to investigate the use of clean, affordable, highly effective LED UVC covid disinfection, which has been used with great success in healthcare settings for decades, let’s have an exciting discussion. With our help you’ll protect your audiences better, and you might even enjoy a positive outcome for your bottom line.
