The nation has gone bedbug crazy, no surprise when the thought of being bitten while you’re asleep is so horrible. The LAD Bible recommends washing clothes and bedding on a high heat then tumble drying them at the highest heat setting. The Sun says an expert has issued an urgent warning about bedbugs infesting cars and taxis. And one TikTok user’s solution to the ‘plague’ of bedbugs turned out to be so dangerous it could set houses on fire and ‘endanger lives’.
One family’s little boy suffered terrible bites after a break at a holiday camp. And according to MSN, sniffer dogs are being used to detect bedbugs in British hotels and homes, with the Rentokil pest control agency taking the lead. Sadly the springer spaniels ‘and other breeds’ being used to track the bugs down can only find them, not kill them. And a woman has been spotted in a full hazmat suit on board the Eurostar.
The outbreak is still being blamed on Paris, while in fact the bugs are infesting every country in Europe, have been for millennia, and are probably doing their thing right now in every nation on the planet. The Mirror claims bedbugs like to hide in the oddest places including inside stuffed animals, purses, and fluorescent light bulbs. They go on to say the bugs are ‘already hiding’ in ‘dozens’ of homes in Swindon.
Wales Online recommends not keeping ‘clutter’ next to your bed, not bringing second hand furniture in without checking it, and always examining your luggage before taking it indoors after a holiday in a country where there are bedbugs. Other newspapers claim we all need to be ‘vigilant and proactive’, and one bright spark says baking soda will kill them off by ‘cutting into a bed bug’s shell’.
It’s difficult to get to grips with the truth in a situation like this, where panic seems to have taken hold. But one fact remains the same whatever the media says:
our UVC disinfection lamps kill bedbugs and their eggs quickly and efficiently with no need for nasty chemicals, special dogs, hazmat suits or baking soda.
Some bedbug science
Bedbugs aren’t new on the human scene. In August 2020 a report revealed signs of bedbugs in piles of 227,000-year-old grass bedding, Apparently the bedding was arranged on top of ash from a fire, which the ancient occupants maybe thought would help keep the insects at bay.
The latest infestations aren’t new, either. Those in power have had decades of warnings. In January 1990 research revealed how bedbugs were making their way into towns and cities around the world. 2002 saw warnings about bed bugs hiding in second hand stuff from car boot sales. In April 2009 there were reports of a dramatic resurgence in bedbugs, this time so bad it forced the US Environmental Protection Agency to hold the world’s first ever Bedbug Summit.
January 2011 saw reports about bedbug resistance to pesticides, and later the same year a paper was published about bedbug genetic analysis, showing how a mass building-wide infestation could be started off by just one pregnant female bug.
Reassuringly, while bedbugs can carry the superbug methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), there’s no evidence that the bugs can pass the infection on... yet.
