As usual it’s all go in our world. Here are just some of the latest covid stories designed to reveal the truth of the situation, give you the facts, and provide the science. Here’s the latest covid news.
The covid global death toll rises...
The total global recorded death toll from covid sits at five million at this point, less than two years since the virus first arrived. Around the world about 7000 people are dying of covid every day, according to research by Johns Hopkins University, USA. Sadly the true number is going to be a lot higher, with experts predicting the current death toll is more likely to be around 16.7 million deaths, including those who died from covid without knowing they had it, and people who couldn’t get treatment for other illnesses and disease because hospitals were ‘overwhelmed’ by covid cases.
Two jabs? You still have a 25% risk of catching covid
Even if you’ve had both your doses, you still face a 25% risk of catching covid from the people in your household. If you’re not vaccinated your risk leaps up to 38%. The study looked at people with the delta variant and took place between May and September 2021.
Your infection risk factor also depends on the viral load you’re exposed to, ie. how much virus is found in your nose and throat swabs. The viral load was higher in older people, and those who have been jabbed saw their viral load go down faster than unvaccinated people.
SAGE member resigns over ‘concerning’ levels of covid transmission
You advise the government, but they don’t listen. It must be very frustrating. Sir Jeremy Farrar, Head of Wellcome’s health charity, resigned from SAGE at the end of last month. He was an advocate for stricter restrictions, including mask wearing, to deal with the UK’s current infection levels, which he says remain “concerning”. Instead of carrying on as a SAGE member, he will be focusing on the work going on at Wellcome designed to support the international research effort and “end the pandemic.”
Netherlands brings back covid restrictions
The Netherlands is leading the way in bringing back covid restrictions, having – like many countries – relaxed things over the summer. People will once again be required to wear a face mask, work from home half the week wherever possible, and use covid passes to get into restaurants and museums. The country reported 7727 new covid cases on 2nd November, compared with 33,546 in the UK. The difference is enormous. The Netherlands obviously has a very different perspective on risk compared to the UK government.
Some people are not self-isolating for long enough
It looks like 25% of people aged 35 – 54 are deciding not to self-isolate for the full ten days after testing positive. The Office for National Statistics says a survey of 881 people in England, which took place in late September – early October, revealed how just 75% of people who participated isolated for ten days after a positive test, down from 86% in July. The opposite is happening for those aged 18-34 with 82% isolating properly at the moment, up from 75% in July.
Unvaccinated New Yorkers forced to take unpaid leave
About 9000 unvaccinated people in New York who work in the public sector have been put on unpaid leave. One in four New York fire fighters remain unjabbed, along with one in six of the city’s police force.
Disneyland Shanghai closes down after 1 covid case
A single visitor tested positive... and they shut the whole place down. China’s Shanghai Disneyland attraction has been closed down as the country aims for zero covid infections, a goal they want to reach in time for the 2022 Winter Olympics. On 7th November 2021 the UK registered 30,305 new infections. The disparity in the way nations are treating covid is wide, and getting wider.
Let’s talk covid killers!
Our robots kill covid in just a few minutes. The UCV light they use makes covid and other coronaviruses harmless in no time, damaged so badly they can’t reproduce or spread. If you want to keep yourself, your staff, your business partners, visitors and customers safe from covid into the future, it’s time to get busy with the LED.
