The Guardian, amongst others, is reporting on the fact that this autumn and winter’s inevitable covid surge will place a ‘heavy straw on camel’s back’ for every hospital in the nation. Read on to find out what’s going on, and discover what you can do to help stop covid spreading so far and fast this winter.
How the state of the NHS doesn’t bode well for covid this winter
Our hospitals are already suffering, with plenty saying they’ll be unable to cope if there’s the expected winter covid surge, but it’s a long term thing. According to New Scientist magazine the NHS has lost 25,000 hospital beds since 2010, leaving us with fewer beds than 21 EU countries. The UK’s hospital staffing crisis also rumbles on, with NHS England alone short of 12,000 hospital doctors and over 50,000 nurses and midwives. To top it all off, a recent survey revealed just 27% of those working in the NHS felt there are enough people in the service to do a good job. And one in nine nurses are currently leaving the NHS, a surge of a different kind that’s only making things worse.
Covid hospitalisations have just risen by 37% in a week, and health leaders are clamouring for the government to bring back mask-wearing. Last week at least eight hospitals declared a ‘critical incident’, signalling they can’t cope with any more patients. The Office for National Statistics says it’s too early to say if an autumn Covid wave has begun, but experts are already demanding the government fix the NHS staffing shortages they’ve brought about as fast as possible. Sadly even if they do that, and do it fast, it’ll be like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted.
As Dr Adrian Boyle, the newpresident of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, told the Observer newspaper,
“Our system is under-resourced. We don’t have enough beds, and we don’t have the workforce for the demand that we’re being asked to deal with. Covid just makes everything that much harder and it’s entirely valid to link this with critical incidents being called around the country. All hospitals are feeling significant levels of pressure at the moment. Covid is a very heavy straw on the camel’s back.”
The first signs of a fresh covid boom hit the West Country, with NHS Devon warning people about long waiting times. Unless it’s life-threatening, there’s not much point turning up at an A&E in the region. There are similar worries in the Midlands and the north. Add the potential for a ‘twindemic’ of flu and covid, which we mentioned in a recent article, and the outlook is grim.
Dr Veena Raleigh, senior fellow at The King’s Fund, says covid is now the sixth leading cause of death, with more than 300 people dying each week. In her words,
“Although it is early days, this rise in cases is consistent with what’s been expected as winter approaches. Acting now to prevent further hospitalisations and deaths is crucial.”
She’s just one of a growing number of health professionals expressing serious concerns, but so far it doesn’t look like the government is listening. So can we take things into our own hands? As a business leader, yes you can.
What you can do to help stop the spread of covid this winter
As a business owner, there’s something you can do to help stop covid spreading so far and fast this winter. And it’s a simple yet incredibly effective thing.
While there’s nothing any of us can do about the long term staffing and funding deficits in the NHS and social care services we’ve suffered since 2010, you can keep your employees, customers, visitors, suppliers and anyone else visiting your premises safe from covid using our affordable, cheap to run and highly effective covid-killing UVC units. The technology is safe, clean, and kills covid more efficiently than a full team of human cleaners working 24/7/365 could ever hope to achieve.
If you’d like to do your bit for the UK and the NHS, let’s talk about fitting covid killing UVC tech at your place.
