The latest covid news – 14 key covid stories for the week
In a week when covid booster jabs are being offered to people aged 40-49 for the first time in a bid to ‘save Christmas’, we’re experiencing more interest than ever before in our UVC covid disinfection robots. When the news about the extension of booster jabs broke so did the NHS website, which crashed thanks to massive demand. Here’s the latest covid news you can trust, fresh from New Scientist magazine.
14 crucial items of covid news
- The UK is still suffering from the world’s 4th highest number of covid infections, topped only by the US, India and Brazil
- France and Israel are offering third booster jabs
- Last week, around the world, a total of 48,000 people dies of covid
- The UK is 6th in the world for covid deaths, surpassed only by Russia, Mexico, India, Brazil and the USA, which has suffered from more covid deaths than any other nation. Scientists agree the real numbers will be a lot higher – we’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg reported
- In Singapore they plan to refuse treatment for people who have caught covid because they refused vaccinations ‘by choice’
- In Europe they’re suffering a 10% rise in covid cases in just one week, placing the continent at risk of more lockdowns – experts are predicting we may see 500,000 more deaths by February 2022 if actions are not taken to limits its spread
- Some German hospitals are closing their doors to new patients thanks to high numbers of covid hospitalisations
- Some healthcare workers are turning out to be resistant to covid – and they sit at the heart of new science designed to create a vaccine that kills of every kind of corona virus, including flu and covid itself
- Scientists are also working on a universal flu vaccine that could prevent the next pandemic
- There are hints that a skin patch might be an excellent way to absorb covid vaccines, performing even better than injections
- There are worries that covid might soon break out into populations of wild animals. It has already infected white tail deer in the USA in a ‘silent epidemic’ that has become ‘rife’, and is probably already circulating in other wild animals around the world. If it hops back into humans from animals we face a bigger then ever risk of new and more dangerous variants emerging
- Almost every person in Iran has already caught covid at least once, but the country has not achieved herd immunity. In fact the delta variant is creating a ‘punishing’ new wave of fatalities. Like the UK’s, Iran’s covid measures have been ‘halting and ineffective’, with mixed messages from the authorities
- While Australia hasn’t had a single case of measles since covid hit, the pandemic has also disrupted immunisation plans. Experts fear there might be a ‘massive’ resurgence of measles before long, a disease that can be fatal
- Fewer infections during lockdown has led to a drop of 17% in the use of antibiotics – very good news when their over-use means some diseases, like TB, are becoming immune to the drugs and there’s a worldwide antibiotic crisis on the horizon
Taken together, the news isn’t looking good
Roll all of this together and the news isn’t particularly positive. Between 8th and 14th November 2021 there were a total of 262,419 new covid cases in the UK, an increase of 6% compared to the week before. During the same week we suffered a total of 1093 deaths, down just fewer than 7%. You need one of our covid disinfection robots to keep everyone safe!
