We all know you can still catch covid, or be reinfected, despite being fully vaccinated and boosted, thanks to variants like omicron. The ZOE Health Study says increasing infection levels prove covid hasn’t gone away, and that we still need to be vigilant. Now we’re seeing news of new covid symptoms, with two ‘early warning’ signs to look out for.
In Norway a study interviewed 111 out of 117 guests who attended a party in winter 2021, where there was an outbreak of omicron. 66 people definitely had covid and 15 more were ‘possibly’ infected. 89% of the 111 studied had been given two doses of an mRNA vaccine, and none of them had a booster jab. All the infected, fully-jabbed people showed the same sort of symptoms:
If you’re fully vaccinated it can be hard to distinguish between covid and a common cold. On the other hand experts at the ZOE project say about half of all ‘new colds’ at the moment are actually covid. So what are the early warning signs? Apparently fatigue and fainting or dizzy spells are signs you could have picked up covid. This is borne out by doctors in Germany, who have spotted a clear connection between the infection and recurrent fainting spells.
High hopes from the USA about the covid XBB variant
Dr. Anthony Fauci says the new covid XBB subvariant and the BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 variants now represent more than 50% of all US cases. The XBB strain has spread the most in the north east USA, with over 5% of infections in the regions linked to XBB. The same variant is spreading fast in some South Asian countries as well as other parts of the globe, thanks to international travel.
While XBB cases are ‘potentially doubling’ every 12 days or so, faster than the BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 variants, the US government says they don’t think XBB will pose an omicron-level threat. They say the surges seen so far appear to be seasonal, not specifically because of the variant.
At the same time the previous omicron variants of some concern, BA.4 and BA.5, have dropped away across the USA. It looks like BA.5 is driving fewer than 20% of new infections and BA.4 has ‘virtually disappeared.’
UK covid stats for the end of November 2022
So what’s going on in the UK right now as regards covid? These numbers are the latest, covering the week ending 15th November. The percentage of people testing positive is still dropping in England, Wales and Scotland, but the trend for Northern Ireland is ‘uncertain’:
