The latest covid news reveals a surge in UK cases. The most-frequently infected people are 5-17 year olds who haven’t been vaccinated. Plenty of those who have had their two jabs are catching covid anyway. At the same time one lab has released 43,000 false PCR test results, the UK’s booster jab plan has gone pear-shaped, and there are nowhere near enough Long Covid clinics to cope with the predicted number of Long Covid cases. Here’s the latest news, which once more reveals an urgent need for reliable covid disinfection tech like ours.
Lab fail leaves people vulnerable
An estimated 43,000 people might have been given false negative results from their PCR tests. NHS Test and Trace has stopped testing at the Immensa Health Clinic Wolverhampton lab after an investigation. Samples due at the lab are now being sent somewhere else instead. Luckily there’s no evidence of faults in the lateral flow or PCR tests themselves. The mistakes affect people whose tests were taken between 8th September and 12th October, mostly the south west of England. People who could be infectious without realising it have been contacted, and their close contacts are being asked to take another test.
There are also problems at the Newbury Show Ground testing site, which has also been the source of false negative results, this time affecting people who had a negative result there between 3rd and 12th October.
Booster vaccine rollout ‘a chaotic failure’
Charities say the government’s rollout of booster vaccines for those at extra risk is ‘a chaotic failure’. Fewer than half of eligible people have been contacted so far, and charities Blood Cancer UK and Kidney Care UK are angry. Gemma Peters, the Chief Executive of Blood Cancer UK, says, “It is now clear that the rollout of the third doses for the immuno-compromised has been a failure that was poorly planned and badly implemented.”
Long covid clinic shortage warning for winter
You can still catch covid after having both jabs, and Long Covid is a risk everyone who gets the virus takes. In England alone we currently have around 706,000 people with long covid symptoms but just 89 specialist Long Covid clinics. Experts fear this winter will see another large peak, followed by a peak in cases of Long Covid. This could easily overwhelm existing clinics already groaning under the strain.
UK 5-17 year olds are being infected ‘exponentially’
Covid infections rose exponentially in 5-17 year olds through September as experts predicted, simply because the schools went back and comparatively few pupils were vaccinated. Overall the prevalence of the virus ‘remained stable’, with 1 in 120 of us infected between 9th and 27th September. Evidence also shows, for the vaccinated amongst us, the risk of infection increases again three months after vaccination. And this means the government really needs to get its 3rd booster jab act sorted out very quickly indeed.
