In some parts of the world it feels like there’s no risk from covid any more. In others there are surges so dramatic that lockdown is on the cards and people are panic-buying.
The pandemic isn’t over by any means. The news coverage might be dying back. We might be getting used to a new way of living. But even though the experts are saying this is no time to be complacent, the shops are packed with mask-less people.
Some of us are feeling safe enough at this point. Others are horrified by the casual attitude England in particular is taking to the ongoing threat of infection and the even worse threat of new variants. As a public-facing business – and as any business employing staff – you still need to keep everyone safe, whether they’re over-confident, over-cautious, or somewhere in the middle.
Here’s the latest covid news from around the world.
Worldwide aluminium prices shoot up thanks to covid
China’s zero tolerance policy means every outbreak of covid is treated very seriously, with instant closures and lockdowns. Outbreaks in the country’s major aluminium producing district is having a dramatic effect on the supply and price of aluminium, revealing what a big financial impact the virus is still having on the world’s economy. Experts say the aluminium sector in China may not fully recover until 2023.
Arthritis drug shows promise for serious covid cases
It looks like the arthritis drug Baricitinib reduces covid deaths, even in people who are already taking covid drugs. It dampens the body’s immune response, whose late-stage overactivity damages the lungs and stops the body’s blood clotting system working properly. Baricitinib was already being used to treat severe covid in some countries, now a large trial in the UK reveals how ‘adding it to other treatments’ against covid cuts the death rate by 13%.
Hong Kong lockdown threat sends people panic buying
Hong Kong’s massive omicron surge is sending people into a panic as threats of lockdown emerge. Vaccination rates among elderly people in Hong Kong are unusually low, putting the region’s health system under threat of collapse. Two of the biggest retailers in Hong Kong have already reported shortages of some medicines and foods, and have begun rationing.
Pandemic depression toll revealed
A study by the World Health Organization says depression and anxiety have risen dramatically during the pandemic. Women and youngsters are the worst affected. The stress people are feeling is being laid at the feet of the ‘unprecedented stress of social isolation’ along with mourning loved ones, the simple fear of infection, and the financial worries people are facing. The WHO says this is just the tip of the iceberg. As the WHO’s Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says,
“This is a wake-up call to all countries to pay more attention to mental health and do a better job of supporting their populations’ mental health.”
Long covid and nerve damage
Nerve damage could be a result of long covid, according to one study. A small piece of research into just 17 people suffering long covid reveals 59% had signs of nerve damage, potentially because of the overactive immune response covid can cause. Because our nerves control our breathing, blood vessels, digestion and more, these can all be damaged when you get long covid.
The impact of covid vaccines on children fades fast
It looks like the protection kids aged 5-11 get from two doses of Pfizer/BioNTech fades away fast. Researchers analysed covid cases and hospitalisations in 365,502 fully vaccinated New York children aged 5-11, during an omicron surge. Older children saw their protection against the virus fall from 85% in mid-December to 73% at the end of January. The protection given to younger children fell more dramatically, with protection against hospitalisation dropping from 100% to just 48%. One expert called the difference between the age groups’ experiences ‘striking’.
