On 31st July the UK suffered 71 deaths and more than 26,000 new cases. In the past 7 days we've had 187,548 new confirmed cases. Worldwide the death toll has passed 4.2 million, with more than 196.7 million confirmed cases, and globally 2.19 billion of us have had at least one dose of a vaccine. Here's the latest covid news.
Pregnant women 'urged' to get their covid jabs
Covid hospital admissions among pregnant women are rising fast in the UK. As a result England’s chief midwifery officer, Jacqueline Dunkley-Bent, has encouraged pregnant women to get vaccinated, especially important since pregnancy might come with an increased risk from the delta variant.
An earlier study at the University of Oxford looked at data from 194 hospitals in the UK. They found 3371 pregnant women were admitted to hospital with covid symptoms between 1st March 2020 and 11th July 2021. It was clear the severity of illness people experienced got worse with each wave. 24% of pregnant women admitted during the first UK first wave suffered moderate or severe disease, compared to 36% thanks to the second wave alpha variant, and 45% with the third wave, the delta variant.
It also seems clear pregnant women are more severely affected by the delta variant. Out of 742 pregnant women admitted to hospital with covid symptoms during the study period, just four had been given their first dose of a vaccine and none had been given both doses. Around 99% of pregnant women hospitalised with covid were not vaccinated. Among the general population, about 60% of people admitted to hospital with covid are unvaccinated.
Japan's state of covid emergency
As the Olympics rolls on, Japan is suffering from 'surging' covid cases. The country is expanding its current state of emergency to cover the city of Osaka and surrounding areas, and it'll stay in place until 31st August.
China's latest surge – This time in Nanjing
China is busy testing every single resident of the city of Nanjing for covid after around 200 people tested positive in a new outbreak.
Covid case rise in England worries the experts
Around 1 in 65 people in England are positive right now, up from 1 in 75 last week. Wales are doing a great deal better at 1 in 210 and Scotland is also performing a lot better at 1 in 170. In Scotland cases are dropping at the moment.
In England a run of rising daily cases has reversed the seven-day trend of declining daily case numbers. Some say the increase could even represent 'the very first signs of increasing infections in response to the ending of restrictions on 19th July', but only time will tell.
As the new health minister Sajid Javid said, “when it comes to case numbers no one really knows where they are going to go next”. He recommends 'caution', having already warned that UK cases could rise to 100,000 a day now that most of the restrictions have been removed in England.
Immunity declines – Third doses are on the way
A rise in the delta variant has inspired Israel to start offering third doses for people aged over 60. They're providing third doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine because there's a noticeable decline in immunity as time passes. The supplementary dose should build immunity back up again. There are also rumblings about third doses potentially being offered in the UK this autumn.
